2005/2006 Ontario Museum Association Council Nominations

September 14, 2005

The Nominations Committee, composed of Past President Anne Chafe (Chair), Marilynn Havelka (elected member representative) and President Carrie Brooks-Joiner, is pleased to bring forward the following slate of Council nominations for consideration by the membership at the Annual General Meeting:

ED DRIEDGER, PRESIDENT
(FIRST YEAR OF A TWO-YEAR TERM)

Ed Driedger has a long-standing interest and involvement in museums that has included work in both small and large organizations throughout the province. Over the years, this range of experience has included both front line, collections, administrative and management responsibilities in both the public and not-for-profit sectors. In addition to his current position as Director of @discoverynorthbay, Ed is also heavily involved in a number of other local community based organizations.

"My involvement to date with the OMA has been very useful and informative. It has enhanced my understanding of the sector and given me a far greater appreciation for the many unsung champions in our midst. I look forward to serving the Association, its members and the broader museum community in the coming year as we continue to move forward in a challenging environment."

TAMMY ADKIN, VICE PRESIDENT
(FIRST YEAR OF A TWO-YEAR TERM)

Tammy Adkin has enjoyed every minute of the last nine years that she has spent working at the London Regional Children's Museum. Currently serving as Executive Director, Tammy began her work at the Museum as the Director of Marketing and Fund Development, followed by an appointment as Associate Director. Prior to joining the Children's Museum team, Tammy worked as a journalist and in senior communications roles within the non-profit and corporate sector. Tammy co-chaired the 2000 OMA conference committee, served on the 2002 conference committee, and is currently the chair of the Membership Involvement Task Force.

"The Ontario Museum Association is such a valuable resource to the Children's Museum and to me personally. I feel very fortunate to work as part of this great community of museums in Ontario, and I hope to be able to contribute back to the Association and to the museum community through my involvement on the OMA Council."

TOM LEWIS, CA, MBA, TREASURER
(FIRST YEAR OF A TWO-YEAR TERM)

Tom Lewis has a Commerce degree from McGill University, his Chartered Accountant's designation and an MBA from the University of Western Ontario's Richard Ivey School. He spent eight-and-a-half years as the senior financial manager at the AGO. In 1998, he left to teach and found Sector Three Management Counsel, a Toronto-based consulting company specializing in not-for-profit organizations. He has taught in the not-for-profit study programs at the University of Toronto, York University and Ryerson University. In January 2001, he joined Royal Botanical Gardens as Director Financial Services and Business Development and, in 2003, become Director of Finance at Parc Downsview Park Inc.

CARRIE BROOKS-JOINER, PAST PRESIDENT
(FIRST YEAR OF A TWO-YEAR TERM)

Carrie Brooks-Joiner returns to Council as Past President. Carrie owns the consulting firm Carrie Brooks-Joiner & Associates and provides management and planning expertise to government and non-profit organizations in the culture and social services sectors. She is a frequent instructor and speaker on management, governance, cultural policy and grantsmanship. She is a graduate of the Museum Studies Program, University of Toronto and York University's Certificate Program in Non-profit Management. Earlier in her career, Carrie worked for the federal Department of Canadian Heritage and large and small cultural organizations across Ontario.

"I am honoured to continue to serve on OMA Council as Past President and to continue our focus on the sustainability of Ontario Museums. I look forward to working with the members, my colleagues at the Secretariat and on Council and our funding partners."

MARTY BRENT, COUNCILLOR
(FIRST YEAR OF A SECOND TWO-YEAR TERM)

Marty Brent has been involved in the business of history for over 25 years. She has installed collections at the UBC Museum of Anthropology, co-ordinated museum training and education programs for the OMA, advised boards and staff of community museums throughout the Province of Ontario; developed government museum policy, granting programs, and operated a conservation lab; and served on provincial cultural committees and federal peer review grant assessment teams. Since 1991 she has held the position of Manager of Black Creek Pioneer Village and is responsible for strategic planning, capital development, and operations. She holds a B.A. from Stanford University, an M.A. in Museum Studies from the University of Toronto, and a Certificate in Voluntary Sector / Arts Management from York University.

"As museums face greater challenge in today's changing environment, I see increasing need for wide-ranging skills and advocacy by the Ontario Museum Association. Having a diverse and broad background, I hope to assist OMA move its agenda forward during the 2005/2006 term."

BEV CARRET, COUNCILLOR
(SECOND YEAR OF A TWO-YEAR TERM)

Bev Carret is the Manager of Government and Community Relations at the Art Gallery of Ontario. She has worked at the AGO since 1983 with responsibility in a number of different capacities, including corporate policy, strategic planning and corporate communications. Bev's background in government relations began with a 10-year career at the Toronto office of the French Trade Commission and includes a one-year secondment in 1989 at the (then) Ontario Ministry of Culture and Communications, working as a liaison officer/policy analyst for the cultural agencies.

"The OMA is an important advocate for Ontario museums at all levels of government. The OMA will play a critical role as the federal government moves forward with its new Museums Policy, by providing a clear voice that articulates the needs and priorities of institutions throughout our province."

IAIN NEWBIGIN, COUNCILLOR
(SECOND YEAR OF A TWO-YEAR TERM)

Iain Newbigin is the Director of Communications for Soulpepper Theatre Company, where he started in March of 2005. He has been tasked with creating a communications plan to move the company from a summer season to a year-round theatre company in its new permanent home in Toronto's Distillery Historic District. Prior to Soulpepper, Newbigin worked at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection (August, 2002 - February 2005), and before that at the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art (1998 - 2000), as the director of communications. Newbigin started his arts career at Harbourfront Centre (1990 - 1998), where he worked for the Harbourfront Reading Series. He has an MBA from York University, specializing in marketing, and a BA in English from the University of Toronto. Iain is on the executive of the Attractions Council of Tourism Toronto. He lives in Toronto with his wife and son, an avid museum fan.

"Museums are places of fascination for me. As a child I loved going to the ROM, and I still experience that sense of thrill looking at artifacts and displays from all kinds of museums that open a window onto other times and other places. I'm honoured to sit on council and look forward to working to do the best we can for all of Ontario's museums."

GILLES L. SÉGUIN, COUNCILLOR
(SECOND YEAR OF A SECOND TWO-YEAR TERM)

Gilles Séguin is with the Cultural Services Division, Community and Protective Services, City of Ottawa. His responsibilities as Manager, Heritage Development, include strategic planning, heritage community support and development, city-wide heritage events, the City museums and the City Archives program. Over the past 20 years, Gilles has worked in the archival, information management, and information technology fields.
"The City of Ottawa and its museums benefited from the great success of the May is Museum Month campaign. As a heritage planner within a municipal structure, I look forward to bringing my experience to the work of the Association."

KATHERINE MCCRACKEN, COUNCILLOR
(FIRST YEAR OF A TWO-YEAR TERM)

Katherine McCracken has been working in museums since 1986. She has an Honours BA in History from Huron College, University of Western Ontario and was in the first MA Public History program at University of Waterloo. She discovered that museum work could truly be a career as a summer student at the Historic Naval and Military Establishments in Penetanguishene. Since then she has worked at Historic Sites Service in Alberta, the Michigan Bureau of History, the R.E. Olds Transportation Museum in Lansing, Michigan, the National Heisey Glass Museum in Newark, Ohio and Joseph Schneider Haus Museum in Kitchener. Since May 2004 she has been Director of Guelph Museums.

"I look forward to serving the larger Ontario museum community in a new role on OMA Council, while continuing to enjoy the daily challenges and rewards that are both so much a part of working in a museum."

KATHLEEN POWELL, COUNCILLOR
(FIRST YEAR OF A TWO-YEAR TERM)

Kathleen Powell has been the Manager, City of Niagara Falls Museums, managing the three City owned museums and the Niagara Falls Armoury building for the past three-and-a-half years. Prior to this she was with the Niagara Parks Commission for more than 10 years as Manager of three of their historic sites. Kathleen is a strong advocate of the value of heritage in building strong communities as well as the value of community partnerships in creating a stronger heritage community. Kathleen has a BA in History from Brock University as well as a Certificate in Museums Studies with the Ontario Museum Association.

"The Ontario Museum Association provides a wealth of resources for all levels of heritage professionals and I have personally taken advantage of these for many years. I would like to be able to lend what I've learned to assist in moving the Ontario Museum Assocation forward in exciting and dynamic ways."
