CALL TO ACTION: Pre-Election
(Oct. 10) CMOG Follow-up
With the participation of its members across the province, the
Ontario Museum Association (OMA) coordinated a successful campaign
to increase the provincial support provided to museums resulting
in an annual increase of $ 2.3 million to the Community Museum Operating
Grant (CMOG) program starting this year.
This increase was long overdue and appreciated although it does
not completely close the gap in funding according to the Ontario
Heritage Act, Regulation 877 formula for funding. This is a step
in the right direction for Ontario museums and the OMA encourages
its members to seek continued recognition as a valuable public investment.
At this time, many CMOG recipients have received notification of
increased CMOG funding for 2007.
With the provincial elections taking place on October 10 2007, the
OMA Task Force to increase provincial support to museums urges
all members to write a letter of thanks to the Government of Ontario
for the increase in CMOG funding. We encourage you to write
this letter
today!
Addressed to the current Minister of Culture (Minister Carroll),
your letter needs to emphasize the benefits of this increased
CMOG investment for your own museum and community and should
be copied to your MPP, to all the candidates in your provincial
riding, to the Ministry of Culture, Richard Mortimer (Director Programs
and Services Branch) and to the OMA, so that ALL concerned can be
reminded of the important contribution of Ontario’s museums
to the health and vitality of this province.
For this purpose, and for your convenience, the OMA Task Force to
increase provincial support to museums is providing a draft
letter for your use. Please
click here to view and download a sample letter.
This is another important step in keeping the government’s attention
on museums in Ontario and their needs and to show that we are working
collectively towards increasing provincial support to the museum
sector.
When we speak with one voice and act collectively we can be heard!
Thanks again to so many of you for joining in and helping to increase
the CMOG funding envelope, thanks for your commitment and work on
behalf of the Ontario museum community, and thanks to the members
of the OMA Council as well as the Task Force.
We look forward to discussing our sector’s continued work at the
OMA Annual Conference in Toronto. Act now and join in!
