OMA delivers Standards Workshops with Ministry of Culture
October 2, 2002
After much anticipation and discussion the Ontario Museum Association is pleased to announce a fall series of workshops on Standards for Community Museums. The OMA received confirmation today that the Association will again be partnering with the Ministry of Culture to deliver one-day workshops at six locations throughout the province during November 2002. The workshops will cover three Community Museum Standards: Conservation, Governance, and Finance. These standards apply to any institution submitting an application for funding under the Community Museum Operating Grant (CMOG) Program.
The OMA and the Ministry of Culture are working together to prepare Ontario's museums for the CMOG program and in particular the Standards Assessment anticipated for 2003. The workshops will be delivered by OMA and Ministry of Culture staff along with the participation of Subject Practitioners, selected for their recognized skills and knowledge. These Practitioners, assisted by Ministry staff, will identify best practices and share valuable information gained in their own museum work.
Interpretation Notes will be prepared and distributed at the workshops by the Ministry on the three previously mentioned Standards. The Notes will provide museums with useful information on Ministry expectations of the assessment of these Standards. Workshop participants may have the opportunity to have their own site-specific questions addressed by the Ministry and the Practitioners.
At this time, it is the recommendation of the OMA that the Ministry assess the Conservation and Governance Standards in 2003 and that specific feedback be provided to museums on their performance.
The Ontario Museum Association is pleased to be able to co-ordinate this important professional development and networking opportunity for community museums in Ontario. Our staff is looking forward to the opportunity to meet with you directly. The schedule of workshops appears below. Your invitation to participate will be mailed to you over the next few weeks. One staff person and one Board member per site will be invited to participate. Please plan to attend.
