Canada Summer Jobs Update
May 24, 2007
After a flurry of activity on all museum list-servs and calls and
emails to local MPP's and to HRSDC Minister Monte Solberg, as well
as to Canada Summer Job program staff across the country, museums
across Ontario and Canada are receiving news by phone that previously
declined applications for Canada Summer Jobs will now be funded.
A number of newspapers in various provinces and in the Toronto Star
have also reported that HRSDC Minister Monte Solberg and other MPP's
stated that non-profit organizations who applied under this program
will be funded.
We encourage you to be pro-active with your Summer Canada Job program
local representative and seek information on any previously declined
application. It is important to convey any serious negative impact
that your institution will suffer if you do not receive this anticipated
funding.
Please keep your Ontario colleagues and the OMA informed via the
OMA list-serv.
Good news of decision reversals and follow-up as reported recently
on the canmuse-l listserv follows:
We were turned down on the first round and have received a student
for 10 weeks on the second round. Are we finally being heard?
Susan McNichol, Curator/Heritage Manager, Perth Museum,
Ontario
Haileybury Heritage Museum didn't receive any word from the first
round of funding at all. I called the local HRDC office and they
said I have to wait to get word in the mail. I did an estimate on
what our application would receive on the application: about 34/40,
not enough to get funding. Like many of you, this museum missed
marks on factors completely beyond our control: living in a high-crime
area, for example.Yesterday I had a call from Service Canada, saying
we're getting funding from the second round. She said this is for
museums which have received funds in the past and have valid applications.
They are funding us to approx. the same level as the year before
- one student for about 10 weeks. Way to go everyone!
Sarah Bowdidge, Curator, Haileybury Heritage Museum, ON
Watson's Mill in Manotick is now getting two!! For all of you who
called or got your MP's to call the program folks--THANK YOU SO
VERY MUCH!!!
Isabelle Geoffrion, Manager, Watson's Mill, ON
Owen Sound Marine & Rail Museum just got a call and we are now
being funded. Billy Bishop Heritage received their position in the
first round.
Mary J Smith, Museums Manager, Billy Bishop Heritage Museum,
Owen Sound Marine & Rail Museum, ON
I just a call from Service Canada, the decision was reversed here
too! We got 1 position.
JoAnne Himmelman, Managing Director, Allan Macpherson House
and Park, ON
After receiving a rejection two weeks ago, we received a call from
Service Canada today with one approved position for 10 weeks. Hurray!
Nahanni Born, Administrator, Huronia Museum, ON
We will continue to monitor this situation and encourage you to
keep all of us informed of any continued progress or difficulties
with the Canada Summer Job program.
