OMA 2002 Annual Conference - Update
July 4, 2002
OMA 30th Anniversary Conference: "Imagination, Memory and the Power of Stories", October 16-19, 2002
at Novotel Mississauga
You Asked Us, and We Listened
At last year's Annual Conference delegates told us that they wanted to get out into the host community more, with local educational opportunities that were also fun and interesting. So at this year's 30th Anniversary Conference, we're pleased to include five learning tours taking place in and around Mississauga:
"Development of a Walking Tour" This tour will explore the architectural treasures of downtown Mississauga's historic Streetsville, while also highlighting how and why walking tours are started, as well as how they are publicized and paid for.
"Peel Heritage Complex Integrating Institutions and Organizational Reviews" - This is a behind-the-scenes tour of Brampton's combined art gallery-archives-community museum, and will also discuss the integration of these three institutions as well as the key role of the recently completed Organizational Review in this integration. A side trip to the Brampton Flying Club is also planned for those with a special interest in WWI aviation.
"Multicultural Mississauga" Connecting with Ontario's cultural mosaic begins with learning more about the traditions of the province's different cultural groups. This tour will visit a local Mosque, a Sikh Temple, Kariya Japanese Gardens, and the Mississauga Chinese Centre.
"The Different Faces of Art" The diversity of art institutions will be the focus of this tour, which will visit the Art Gallery of Mississauga, Dupont Canada's corporate collection, and the University of Toronto at Erindale's Blackwood Gallery. It will also tour Springbank, Mississauga's regional arts centre, and the Living Arts Centre, which combines performance, exhibition, and studio spaces.
"A Road Less Travelled" Many visitors to Mississauga catch little more than glimpses of houses as they speed by on the region's major highways. This tour will leave the fast lane behind, focusing on the historic communities, the pristine ravines and parkland, and the Native Canadian heritage that make Canada's sixth-largest city one of its most diverse and interesting.

Travel Assistance Grant Funding
The Canada Council for the Arts Outreach Program has two grant opportunities available for curators, programmers, gallery directors and arts organizations.
The first is for travel assistance to attend promotional events of professional Canadian artists with the intention of considering their work for inclusion in programming. The travel must be within Canada but outside one's own home province or territory.
The second funding opportunity is for travel assistance to curators, programmers, presenters, and arts professionals to attend meetings aimed at creating or developing networks that increase opportunities for professional Canadian artists. Priority is given for travel outside one's own home province or territory. Travel to such things as board meetings and general assemblies is not eligible for assistance.
The grants cover travel expenses only. There are no deadlines for submissions, but applicants must apply a minimum of six weeks before the start of their project.
