Annual General Meeting - October 20, 2006
MOTION duly made and seconded
WHEREAS under the Ontario Heritage Act, museums hold in trust the
collection of the people of Ontario;
WHEREAS museums are an integral part of Ontario communities in every
corner of the province;
WHEREAS with adequate support from the Government of Ontario, museums
can be a key player in helping to realize the educational, social
and economic objectives of the Province;
THEREFORE, be in resolved that the Ontario Museum Association petition
on behalf of its members the Government of Ontario to:
- Invest, as per Regulation 877 of the Ontario Heritage Act, an
additional $5 million in the provincial CMOG program to benefit
existing participants by closing the funding gap between the current
level of funding, unchanged since the 1980s, and the regulated
ceiling in the program;
- Invest an additional $5 million in the CMOG program to allow
excluded Ontario museums to meet the provincial museum standards
and to access the program without impacting the level of support
provided to participants;
- Introduce a new capital program to help Ontario museums meet
Ministry of Culture facility standards, expand existing museum
facilities, and meet public trust responsibilities towards the
collections;
- Allow Ontario museums to access other provincial support programs
which are currently closed to them from the Ontario Arts Council
and the Ontario Trillium Foundation; and
- Augment the annual sustaining funding provided to the Ontario
Museum Association through the Provincial Heritage Organization
transfer payment to compensate for the impact of inflation and
to improve the viability of Ontario's museum sector.
CARRIED unanimously.
