January 2008:
ONTARIO MUSEUM ASSOCIATION RESPONDS
TO MEMBERS AND ESTABLISHES REGIONAL MUSEUM CLUSTERS PROGRAM
Ontario museum workers and volunteers have long known that working
together is more effective than working alone. The OMA is proud
to have initiated the establishment of Regional Museum Networks
in the late 1980's, some of which are still around today. It is
timely to revisit and renew the Network idea so that members of
the museum community can more easilty communicate with each other;
to learn, to exchange ideas, and form new partnerships.
With support from the Ministry of Culture and the Department of
Canadian Heritage, the Ontario Museum Association is pleased to
launch a new program to support regional clusters of museums.
The Regional Museum Clusters Program is planned
as a partnership between a geographical grouping of museums and
the OMA, while also fostering links between institutions in different
regions of Ontario. The OMA will facilitate meetings and connections
between regional museum clusters to strengthen our sector.
How will this Benefit Museums?
This project will assist museums within a regional cluster to work
together and partner to incrase their own vitality within their
community by developing new audiences and sharing resources and
knowledge. It will also bring Association programs, resources and
services to under-serviced areas and will promote "best practices"
in the sector for the benefit of all museums. It will provide opportunities
for museum workers from across the province to get together and
improve their own practice and take this back to their own regions
to share with local colleagues.
Who Can Participate?
At the request of members in established networks, both established
and new museum networks or clusters will be a part of this collaborative
venture.
What Happens Next?
There will be a Regional Museum Cluster Roundtable held in Toronto
on February 14, 2008. This will be an early opportunity for you
to help shape your regional cluster and to refine the details of
the initiative. Travel bursaries will be available to eligible participants.
Details on how you can apply can be found by clicking here.
