Law and Original Order: Legal Aspects of Archives

  Program

 
 

A presentation and discussion that will provide an awareness of legal issues that may arise in the course of archival activities, as well as the ethical obligations of acquisition/ accessioning, appraisal and access/reference services. The general structure of the Canadian legal system will also be addressed, with an understanding of copyright law and privacy legislation as it applies to archival documents.

To be able to…
  • Be familiar with the general structure of the Canadian legal system
  • Understand the basis of copyright law as it applies to archival material
  • Know the context in which privacy legislation applies to archival documents
  • Understand legislative requirements concerning admissibility of archival records as evidence
  • Have a general awareness of other legal issues that may arise in the course of archival activities

Loryl MacDonald

Loryl MacDonald has been the Records Archivist at the University of Toronto Archives since 2000. Prior to this, Loryl held contract positions at the Archives of Ontario, the University of Toronto Archives, and York University Archives. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Simon Fraser University, a Bachelor of Laws from the University of British Columbia, and a Master of Archival Studies from the University of British Columbia. She is also past president of the Archives Association of Ontario and current president of the Toronto Area Archivists' Group.

Fee: $60.00 +$4.20 GST = $64.20 Includes lunch and coffee, tea and juice at breaks. Coffee is on from 8:30 am and lunch will be served at 12:30 pm.
