Three Concurrent Sessions

1.   Building a Case for Culture: Using Statistics and Financials
   

Speaker: Heather C. Young, Young Associates; Billie Bridgman, President and CEO, Council for Business and the Arts in Canada

This session focuses on gathering statistics and using them in a positive way to advocate for your site and to leverage greater opportunities for heritage and culture.

2.   Engaging Youth
   

Speakers: Cheryl Ewing, Director of Development, eyeGo to the Arts; Vishnu Ramcharan, Ontario Science Centre; Heather Robinson, Children and Teens Services Department Head, St. Thomas Public Library

Panellists will discuss characteristics of youth (adolescents and teens), needs of youth, and ways museums and galleries of all types can offer programs and exhibit experiences that are engaging to youth visitors apart from programming for school groups. In addition to sharing what they have learned through their study and work, the panellists will provide you with ideas for valuable partners in meeting youth needs in your community.

3.   Museums and Cultural Tourism
   

Speakers: Craig Metcalf, Director, Department of Culture and Heritage, City of Orillia; Kathryn Stevenson, President, Lake Country Tourism

The business of tourism packaging provides unique opportunities for heritage and cultural organizations. By joining forces with attractions, businesses and special events in your community, you can assemble a tourism package that can be accessed by groups and individual visitors. The Lake Country model provides important benchmarks and highlights successes and challenges.

Three Concurrent Sessions

1.   More than Just Chocolate: The Six Things you Need for a Successful Organization
   

Speakers: Pam Buell, Parks Canada; Christine Kerr, BaAM Productions

Museums, like other organizations, need more than just a building and collection to be successful. This session will outline some of the essential elements of a successful organization.

2.   Human Resources in Culture: Presenting a United Front
   

Speakers: Bob Johnston, Cultural Careers Council of Ontario; Susan Annis, Cultural Human Resources Council

The speakers will discuss their respective and common organizational initiatives on behalf of museum and cultural workers.

3.   Threatened with Closure: Speaking out for the Stuff
   

Speakers: Shanna Dunlop, Fanshawe Pioneer Village; Janice Griffith, Canadian Canoe Museum

Coming together to make the case for the value of collections. Through two case studies, a look at how to advocate for museum collections while being threatened with closure or, even worse, once the doors have already been locked.

Closing Plenary: Dr. Jim Fleck, O.C., Chair, Minister's Advisory Council

Jim Fleck is Chairman of the Council for Business and the Arts in Canada, President of the Art Gallery of Ontario Foundation, Chairman of the Art Gallery of Ontario's Building Committee overseeing the Frank Gehry renovations and extension, and past Chairman of the Board and President of the Art Gallery of Ontario.

He was founding president of The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery at Harbourfront Centre, and director, treasurer and vice-President of The National Ballet of Canada. He was the 2003 winner of the Edmund C. Bovey Award for Leadership Support of the Arts, a national award to recognize individual members of the business community who have contributed leadership, time, money and expertise to benefit the arts.
